Among the most dangerous resorts for pleasure is the theater. Instead of being a school of morality and virtue, as is so often claimed, it is the very hotbed of immorality. Vicious habits and sinful propensities are strengthened and confirmed by these entertainments. Low songs, lewd gestures, expressions, and attitudes, deprave the imagination and debase the morals. Every youth who habitually attends such exhibitions will be corrupted in principle. There is no influence in our land more powerful to poison the imagination, to destroy religious impressions, and to blunt the relish for the tranquil pleasures and sober realities of life than theatrical amusements. The love for these scenes increases with every indulgence, as the desire for intoxicating drinks strengthens with its use. The only safe course is to shun the theater, the circus, and every other questionable place of amusement. There are modes of recreation which are highly beneficial to both mind and body. An enlightened, discriminating mind will find abundant means for the entertainment and diversion, from sources not only innocent, but instructive. Recreation in the open air, the contemplation of the works of God in nature, will be of highest benefit.4 Testimonies, pp. 652-653
How much more true is this statement today than then? Yet we, as Adventists, frequently indulge in it under such excuses as, “But there’s a lot of spirituality in it!” Or, “It’s a true story!” Or, “It’s only fiction, and nothing really bad happens in it.” Or even, “That really bad thing only happens once, and the rest is good, so it’s okay.” Beloved, all that comes from the world of entertainment has some lie attached to it, even if it is “based on a true story”. When will we learn the vital fact taught in the Bible that “no lie is of the truth”? It is the truth that makes us free; all lies make us slaves. The more entertaining they are, the more bound our souls become when we allow them into our minds. Let us take hold of the truth, dear brothers and sisters, with our whole hearts and minds, and let it set us free!
Then said JEHOSHUA to those Jews which believed on Him, “If ye continue in My word, then are ye My disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” They answered Him, “We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest Thou, ‘Ye shall be made free?'” JEHOSHUA answered them, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, ‘Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.'” — John 8:31-34
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.Revelation 21:8
And there shall in no wise enter into it [New Jerusalem] anything that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the LAMB’s book of life.Revelation 21:27
Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.Revelation 22:14-15
